The Story of Jagjeet Hotels & Resorts

Jagjeet Hotels & Resorts is a family business. For more than half a century, three generations of the Bindra family have welcomed travellers to the Darjeeling hills, first with a plate of hot samosas in Kurseong, and since 1980 at Hotel Jagjeet in Mirik.

1969: A restaurant on the road to Darjeeling

In 1969 a retired Sikh gentleman, S. Kesar Singh Bindra, made Kurseong his home. Kurseong was then the stop on the road to Darjeeling for every traveller, and he dreamt of making it big in this small town. He opened the Amarjeet Restaurant, which served hot samosas and gulab jamuns through the foggy Kurseong winters.

In 1979 the restaurant was destroyed in a fire. Instead of simply rebuilding, his son, Surjit Singh Bindra, looked to a new and upcoming destination in the hills: Mirik. The state government, under Chief Minister Siddhartha Shankar Ray, had picked Mirik as the next tourist town of the Darjeeling hills and drawn up master plans for its development.

1980: Hotel Jagjeet opens in Mirik

After many difficulties, the family was among the nominated few given consent to build on the present hotel site, a stone's throw from Mirik's Sumendu Lake. The restaurant was completed in a record three months, and Hotel Jagjeet was inaugurated on 26 September 1980. It was one of the first hotels in the new town, and its multi-cuisine restaurant has been feeding Mirik's visitors ever since.

Over the years the family's work grew beyond Mirik, to Jagjeets Hotel Pradhan on Gandhi Road in Darjeeling, and a reservations office in Siliguri that looks after guests before they even reach the hills.

Today: the next generation

The next generation of the Bindra family now runs the hotels with the same care, and many of our staff have been with us for years. Guests still write to us by name about the people who looked after them. We know these hills as home: which road is open after the rain, when the oranges are sweetest, and where to stand for the best view of Kanchenjunga.
