We run hotels in both towns, so we get asked this a lot. The honest answer: they suit different trips, and they are only two hours apart, so the best plan is often a night or two in each. Here is how they compare.

Choose Darjeeling if...

  • It is your first trip to the hills and you want the classics: Tiger Hill, the toy train and the Mall.
  • You like to walk to cafés, bakeries, bookshops and markets in the evening.
  • You want to add Gangtok or Kalimpong to the same trip.

See our Darjeeling itinerary and Jagjeets Hotel Pradhan.

Choose Mirik if...

  • You want peace and quiet, fresh air and an easy lakeside walk rather than a sightseeing schedule.
  • You are travelling with young children or older parents: the road up is shorter and gentler, and the town is flat around the lake.
  • You have a short weekend from Siliguri or a late flight into Bagdogra.
  • You are visiting in winter and want milder nights, and the orange harvest.

Or do both: a 4-night plan

  1. Night 1–2, Darjeeling: arrive from Bagdogra or NJP; Tiger Hill, Ghoom, Batasia Loop, toy train and the Mall.
  2. Night 3–4, Mirik: drive across through the tea gardens; lake walk, Bokar Monastery, a slow last day, and a short run down to Bagdogra or NJP to go home.

Ending in Mirik means the drive back to the airport or station is under two hours. Contact us to book both hotels in one go.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I stay in Mirik or Darjeeling?

Stay in Darjeeling if it is your first visit and you want to see the famous sights. Choose Mirik for a quieter, gentler break, or for a short trip from Siliguri. With three nights or more, do both.

Can I visit Mirik as a day trip from Darjeeling?

Yes. Mirik is about 49 km away, two hours each way, and many Darjeeling sightseeing tours include it. You will get more out of it with a night by the lake, when the day-trippers have gone.

Is Mirik colder than Darjeeling?

No, Mirik is around 500 metres lower and a few degrees warmer. You will still want a jacket in the evenings for most of the year.
