Short answer: October to early December for clear mountain views, and March to May for flowers and pleasant weather. The monsoon (mid-June to September) is green, quiet and cheaper, but wet. Below is what each month is really like, for Darjeeling and for Mirik, which is a little lower and warmer.

The seasons at a glance

  • Spring (March–May): mild days, rhododendrons and magnolias, first-flush tea. The busiest season for families on summer holidays.
  • Monsoon (June–September): heavy rain, cloud and mist, lush tea gardens, the lowest room rates.
  • Autumn (October–November): washed-clean air after the rains and the clearest views of Kanchenjunga.
  • Winter (December–February): cold and dry, with bright days and very cold nights. Quieter, except over Christmas and New Year.

Best time for...

  • Mountain views and photography: mid-October to early December.

  • Honeymoons and quiet breaks: November, February and March.
  • Tea lovers: March–April for first flush, May–June for second flush.
  • The best rates: July and August, if you don't mind rain.

What to pack

Layers, whatever the month. Even in May, a Tiger Hill sunrise is cold. Add a waterproof jacket and good walking shoes in the monsoon, and a heavy jacket, cap and gloves from November to February. Darjeeling's streets are steep: comfortable shoes matter more than you think.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit Darjeeling?

October and November, for clear skies and the best views of Kanchenjunga. March to May is the next best, for pleasant weather and flowers, though the peaks are often hazy.

Does it snow in Darjeeling?

Rarely. Darjeeling gets light snow on some winters, usually in January or February, but it is not guaranteed. For reliable snow, you would need to travel higher, into Sikkim.

Is it safe to visit Darjeeling in the monsoon?

Yes, but expect rain most days and occasional landslides that close or slow the roads. Keep a spare day in your plans, and check road conditions before driving up.

When is Mirik best?

Mirik follows the same seasons but is lower and a few degrees warmer than Darjeeling. Winter there is milder and it is orange season from November to January.
